It was no secret that the Denver Broncos were in dire need of a quarterback heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, so it wasn’t the least bit surprising when they selected Oregon QB Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick.
Head coach Sean Payton finally spoke about the pick and shed some insight into the thought process that went into making Nix the franchise’s next QB.
DNVR beat reporter Zac Stevens shared a quote from Payton, where he said “We could have moved a couple picks back and got some picks, but at the end of the day, this was our guy. Let’s just take him. Let’s not overthink it. We would have been sick if we lost him fust for a couple fifth-round picks.”

This is the right mentality to have in the draft, as it is never worth losing your guy just for some added depth.
If you see someone you like, you don’t worry about drafting them a few spots higher than other teams might, because that player could be worth much more to you than he could to anybody else.
That was certainly the case with Nix, who is a pro-ready QB and was also the last remaining top-tier QB on the board when the Broncos were up at No. 12.
Five quarterbacks went in the first ten picks, with the Atlanta Falcons throwing a wrench in everybody’s plans by shocking everyone with the Michael Penix Jr. pick at No. 8 overall.
Nix should start right away in Denver, and if he’s good, nobody will question this pick at all.
