The Dallas Cowboys have been under heavy fire this offseason.
Despite vowing to go ‘all-in,’ Jerry Jones let some of his best players go, didn’t get a top-of-the-line or even starting-caliber running back in free agency or the NFL Draft, and didn’t sign Dak Prescott to a contract extension.
Even so, and despite the league-wide criticism and mockery, sports analyst Colin Cowherd actually liked what they did in the NFL Draft.
Talking to John Middlekauff, he called the Cowboys’ approach ‘strategic’ (Via The Volume).

Cowherd argued that the reason why they went heavy on the offensive line and didn’t get a wide receiver until the sixth round is because Jerry Jones wouldn’t give Dak plenty of ammo ahead of a contract year, knowing it could end up backfiring.
He believes he doesn’t want to get stuck with Dak, which is the same reason why he didn’t sign him to an extension in the first place.
Middlekauff added that Prescott and HC Mike McCarthy would most likely be playing for their jobs this season, adding that he didn’t know whether a team should give Dak $55 million a year, knowing that they would be a one-and-done playoff team at best.
At the end of the day, Dak Prescott is Jerry Jones’ best choice now, but he might not be his best choice for years to come.
He hasn’t proved that he can be a winning quarterback at the highest level, and while it might seem like the Cowboys are tanking right now, they might be just looking for a way to move on from their underperforming quarterback.
