The Denver Broncos made a somewhat surprising decision when they traded for Zach Wilson.
They were in the mix to get a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, so it didn’t make much sense for them to have another backup, especially with his salary.
Perhaps they thought they could still salvage his career, or maybe they wanted an insurance policy in case they couldn’t get their hands on any of the top-notch QB prospects.
But now that they have Bo Nix, it didn’t make much sense to hold onto Wilson.
That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Jeff Legwold’s report about them not picking up his fifth-year option (via Dov Kleiman).

This is a no-brainer.
That option would’ve given Wilson a fully guaranteed $22.4 million salary in 2025.
The Broncos now have a QB room consisting of Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham, Zach Wilson, and Ben DiNucci, perhaps one of the least impressive in the entire league.
Wilson completed just 57% of his passes and logged 25 interceptions against 23 touchdowns during his failed three-year stint with the New York Jets.
And while there should be an open competition for the QB1 job in Mile High, Nix might have an edge over the rest of the pack, and it would be very tricky for Wilson to find reps and playing time to salvage his career with Sean Payton’s team.
