The quarterback position is not just the most important position in football.
It is the most important position in all of sports.
Former NFL GM Thomas Dimitroff chatted with NFL analyst Ross Tucker on the “Ross Tucker Podcast” about the importance of having security at that position.
“If you fail on the quarterback…you’re out and you’re never back in because you are judged by that ultimate move,” the former Falcons GM said.

Dimitroff could not be more right.
Look at what having stability and consistency at the quarterback position has done for teams like the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, and Pittsburgh Steelers over the last 20-30 years.
Finding the right guy is ultimately what defines almost every GM in the NFL.
Also, drafting and developing is a very key talent that only so many teams have been able to master.
Look at what happened to former Bears GM Ryan Pace.
He was brought in back in 2015 to help find the Bears a franchise quarterback.
He is known for drafting Mitchell Trubisky instead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson in 2017.
Chicago won zero playoff games in Pace’s tenure, and he lost his job in 2021.
On the flip side, look at somebody such as the late, great Packers GM Ted Thompson.
He made the courageous move to draft Aaron Rodgers when the team already had Brett Favre.
That ended up going pretty well for all parties.
This is something the Atlanta Falcons are trying to do.
It is why they drafted Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall, even though they already had Kirk Cousins.
Time will tell to see if that works out for them, but it completely goes along with what Dimitroff is saying.
Having a successful quarterback is what will truly define the front office.
