Quarterback Brock Purdy is arguably the greatest “Mr. Irrelevant” draft selection in NFL history.
The San Francisco 49ers stole him at pick No. 262 back in the 2022 NFL Draft.
GM John Lynch appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” Thursday morning to talk about a number of topics, including the selection of Purdy and the people who deserve credit for that draft pick.
“I think two people deserve so much credit for Brock Purdy. One of them now is in our pro department. He’s a guy by the name of Steve Slowik…The other guy I’d say was Brian Griese,” Lynch stated.
“There’s two people that deserve so much credit for us drafting Brock Purdy & one of them is Steve Slowik..
He spoke so glowingly about him & the culture changer that he was at Iowa State..
Brian Griese was incredibly impressed by Brock as well” ~ @JohnLynch49ers #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/FgZ2n7amnY

With the help of staff members like Slowik and Griese, Lynch has been able to build a fantastic team over the last few years.
Steve Slowik, the brother of Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, rightfully deserves props for scouting Purdy.
Griese, a former 11-year NFL quarterback and Pro-Bowler, deserves props from a coaching perspective.
Lynch and Shanahan made the right call by drafting him and developing him super quickly.
Purdy has taken the 49ers to two consecutive NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl in his first two NFL seasons.
He led the NFL in passer rating in 2023 (113.0) and made the first Pro Bowl appearance of his young career.
The team is 21-6 with him starting under center, including playoffs, and they’ve won back-to-back NFC West crowns.
This just goes to show how funny the NFL is sometimes.
The team thought former first-round pick Trey Lance was the answer behind Jimmy Garoppolo.
It turns out that a seventh-round quarterback out of little Iowa State was the answer all along.
