In one of the most intriguing moves of the NFL offseason, the Chicago Bears traded former first-round quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers have already made a decision on Fields’ contract situation.
According to insider Ari Meirov, the Steelers have declined Fields’ fifth-year option, which would’ve gone for $25.6 million.
The #Steelers also officially declined the fifth-year option on QB Justin Fields, which would have been worth $25.6M.
So, Justin Fields and Najee Harris are now in the final year of their contracts and are slated to be free agents next offseason. https://t.co/FPrtAjvci2 pic.twitter.com/x32olHvgzy

Meirov also notes that the Steelers have declined running back Najee Harris’ fifth-year option too.
Starting with Fields, this move was to be expected.
He will be a backup to Russell Wilson this year and will not be worth the $25.6 million.
Perhaps, if he proves himself to be a serviceable and quality backup, at just 25 years of age, he can earn a new contract after the season.
The Harris situation is quite fascinating.
The Pro Bowl running back has been one of the league’s most consistent running backs since he entered the league as a first-rounder in 2021.
In each of his first three years, he has rushed for over 1,000 yards and recorded at least 1,200 scrimmage yards.
His 144 career receptions have proven how good he is as a receiver too.
He and teammate Jaylen Warren both eclipsed over 1,100 scrimmage yards last season.
This move will save the Steelers roughly $7 million in cap space.
Perhaps the Steelers are also concerned about paying a running back who is entering his late-20s.
But he also hasn’t missed any games in his three-year career, which is particularly impressive for a running back, let alone a Steelers running back.
If he puts together an impressive 2024, look for the Steelers to give him a fresh, new deal to avoid losing him as a free agent.
