Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft last week, former University of Michigan star quarterback J.J. McCarthy was considered to be one of the best talents available at his position and would potentially be taken by a quarterback-needy team early in the first round.
Ultimately, McCarthy was one of the record-breaking six quarterbacks taken early in the first round of the draft, with the Minnesota Vikings getting the chance to bring him in and potentially make him Kirk Cousins’ successor under center.
Even though the team brought in veteran quarterback Sam Darnold, the consensus is McCarthy will eventually become the starter sooner than later and serve as the team’s next franchise quarterback.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell recently made an appearance on “The Jim Rome Show” and talked about what he likes about McCarthy and why he’s so special.
“I think he’s off the charts from an intangible standpoint,” O’Connell said. “So you can kind of check that box pretty quickly when you spend even a couple moments with J.J. … There’s very few people that don’t just sing their praises for J.J.”

Along with McCarthy, five other notable quarterbacks were taken in the first round, including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and Bo Nix.
All of these quarterbacks are talented in different ways and will likely have their chance to become a franchise player for their respective teams, but McCarthy might get his shot early in the 2024 campaign if Darnold struggles or he beats out the veteran during training camp and the upcoming NFL preseason.
