The Miami Dolphins had several areas of need entering the offseason.
They addressed most of them, particularly in the NFL Draft.
Needless to say, most of those needs were on the defensive side of the field, especially after star DT Christian Wilkins left to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Still, they were also eager to add even more firepower to their already impressive offense.
That’s why they were keen to sign Odell Beckham Jr.
After weeks of rumors and speculation, Mike McDaniel finally got his new guy, giving him $3 million guaranteed on a deal that could be worth as much as $8.25 million, depending on incentives.
However, even though they got him at great value, an unnamed coach was less than impressed by the move (via Yahoo Sports):
“It’s not like he’s like a bigger possession-type receiver anyway. He’s always been the stretch-the-field type guy,” the assistant coach said. “I don’t know why they signed him.”
Of course, Odell Beckham Jr. is no longer the player he once was, and that’s why it took him so long to find a new home.
But in today’s market, $3 million — or even $8 million — is just spare pocket change for a wide receiver.
The Dolphins don’t need OBJ; he’s a luxury.
If he can give them something, this deal could end up being a huge bargain.
And even if he’s struggled with injuries, he’s still a privileged athlete, and his presence out there will require defensive attention, deferring it from Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
In today’s economy, the Dolphins can definitely afford to have a $3 million decoy out there.
It’s not like they will lose a lot if things don’t work out.
