With one of the best running backs of this era in Derrick Henry available on the free agent market, the Dallas Cowboys, who had a need at running back, could’ve signed him.
However, they decided against it.
Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones appeared on Mad Dog Sports Radio to chat with host Adam Schein about why Dallas chose not to sign the former All-Pro running back.
“We just didn’t have the dollars to allocate to the running back position,” Jones said on Monday.
“Our situation is just, and no one ever wants to say it, but it’s salary cap.”#Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones tells @AdamSchein why the team didn’t pursue Derrick Henry and lost Tony Pollard in free agency.

Dallas would later opt to sign former Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott to a one-year deal worth roughly $3 million.
Henry ended up signing with the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year, $16 million deal that pairs him with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.
As Jones stated in the interview, if Dallas had the money, they would’ve just re-signed Tony Pollard, who left for Tennessee on a three-year deal as a free agent.
The running back situation will certainly be an interesting one to watch in Dallas this season.
As it stands right now, Elliott, young running back Deuce Vaughn, and veteran back Royce Freeman are the top three running backs on the depth chart.
Look for the team to use a running back-by-committee approach to the 2024 season.
The Cowboys finished ranked 14th in rushing last season, and that was with a Pro Bowl back in Pollard.
It will be interesting to watch this committee approach in Mike McCarthy’s offense.
They will need to lean on Prescott’s arm a lot most likely.
