For most of Andy Reid’s tenure in charge of the Kansas City Chiefs, they’ve been known for their explosive offense, not so much for their defense.
This year, however, it’s been Steve Spagnuolo’s unit as the one that’s been standing out from the rest.
That was on full display during their narrow 19-8 win over the Denver Broncos.
The Chiefs’ defense held the Broncos to under 200 yards and allowed just one score, which is why Patrick Mahomes went out of his way to give them credit for the win.
Mahomes has been as good as per usual, but the offense has failed to be as explosive, especially on third down.
Unsurprisingly, that has a lot to do with their lack of playmakers on that side of the field, which was even more evident in their only loss, which was a game in which Travis Kelce wasn’t able to play.
The Chiefs need to bolster their WR corps one way or the other, whether it’s digging deep into the free agent/waivers market or looking to make a trade.
Their defense has been the best since Mahomes and Reid have been together, and they’re currently the second-best in the league in terms of points allowed per game and the fifth-best in yards allowed per game.
Patrick Mahomes and company managed to win two Super Bowls despite their defense being middle of the pack, so just imagine what they could do if they landed another star wide receiver to revamp their passing game.
