Jason Kelce is transitioning away from the field to the studio, as he will be joining ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” on a multi-year deal beginning this season.
In order to do his job well, he’s going to have to learn to be unbiased, and he started today by sharing an honest opinion about one of his closest former teammates.
A fan asked Kelce on Twitter what he thought of left tackle Jordan Mailata when he first saw him, and Kelce said, “If I’m being honest he looked absolutely terrible,” and added, “But, he looked terrible because he had never played.”
If I’m being honest he looked absolutely terrible. But, he looked terrible because he had never played. The size and athleticism was obviously there, it was just a question of if it was going to click for him down the road with the techniques and fundamentals. https://t.co/AFPfsEmfyi

Kelce noted that the size and athleticism were obviously there and the only question was whether things would eventually click for him in terms of the fundamentals.
Mailata’s story is a unique one, as he became only the second player ever to be drafted without having any high school or college football experience.
He came straight from rugby, and his massive 6-foot-8, 365-pound frame was enough to make him a 7th-round pick just based on size alone.
At 27, he is now one of the best left tackles in the league and teamed with Kelce to form part of one of the league’s most dominant offensive lines of the past few years.
Kelce is one of the most honest and relatable stars the NFL has produced in years, and it’s great that fans are going to get a lot more of him this fall when he joins ESPN.
Hopefully, he has some nicer things to say about Mailata, though.
