The Milwaukee Brewers went from having an elite rotation trio for the playoffs to just a couple of stellar pitchers when it was announced that Brandon Woodruff was placed on the injured list with a right shoulder capsular injury in late September.
It might have been one of the reasons behind them being swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Woodruff already had an injured list stint in April with a similar issue.
His shoulder has barked all year long, yet he was able to post a brilliant 2.28 ERA in 67 innings this year.
The injury he sustained just before the postseason carries devastating long-term consequences for the pitcher and the Brewers, unfortunately.
“News from the Brewers: RHP Brandon Woodruff underwent surgery today to repair the anterior capsule in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss most, if not all, of next season, according to the club,” insider Adam McCalvy reported.

Yikes.
Woodruff is under team control through the 2024 season, so unless the Brewers and him are able to work out a one-year deal that covers 2025, he becomes a non-tender candidate for this offseason.
It’s really a shame he had such a serious shoulder injury.
Many pitchers have stated that shoulder injuries have more potential to be career-threatening than elbow ailments.
The hope is that Woodruff, with enough rest, rehab, and physical therapy, can continue his career at some point in 2024 or 2025.
This is a big blow for the Brewers, who will have to defend their NL Central crown without one of their most talented hurlers for much of the 2024 campaign.
