The Washington Commanders headed into the 2024 NFL Draft owning the No. 2 overall pick and having the advantage of being able to draft one of the best quarterbacks available after the Chicago Bears predictably selected Caleb Williams out of USC.
Although there was quite a bit of debate over who the Commanders would choose at No. 2, with Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels seemingly neck-and-neck, Washington ultimately decided to go with the reigning Heisman Trophy winner to be their leader under center moving forward.
Despite being undersized and arguably taking a lot of unnecessary risks while running the football at LSU, there’s no doubting Daniels’ talent, as he is the total package at the quarterback position and could pay off in a big way for the struggling Commanders.
Apparently, Daniels has already made quite an impression in the nation’s capital, with the rookie turning heads in minicamp.
Veteran tight end Zach Ertz gave Daniels high praise when he was asked about what he’s seen from the rookie quarterback thus far, via The Team 980.
“Very, very, very impressed,” Ertz said. “His preparedness has been kinda unbelievable.”

Obviously, this is a great sign for the Commanders, who desperately need an upgrade at the quarterback position and a leader in the locker room after the franchise began an overhaul this NFL offseason.
Although veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota will likely be able to compete for the starting job, Daniels could easily be named the Week 1 starter if he continues to impress veterans and the coaching staff the way he has thus far.
