Greg Olsen’s popularity and approval rating as a color commentator have ascended in recent years, and many consider him the best in the business, which makes it even tougher to stomach that Tom Brady is taking his spot on FOX’s A team in the booth.
Olsen has become a sympathetic figure in this whole ordeal as his salary is being decreased by $7 million per year by being bumped to the B team, and we finally have his perspective on the situation as well.
Olsen had a clear message for Brady after the 7-time Super Bowl champion reached out to him for advice, and Olsen said “Every guy has their own journey in sports broadcasting. I think everyone thinks it’s easy” and added that he told Brady “I don’t think there’s any real correlation between being a great player or an average player and how that correlates to being a great broadcaster or an average broadcaster.”
Brady will be joining Kevin Burkhardt on a 10-year $375 million deal to form the No. 1 team at FOX, and the team will make its debut in Week 1 for the Dallas Cowboys Vs. Cleveland Browns game.
It’s great that Olsen is taking this in stride and seems to understand the magnitude of Brady’s presence without taking it personally or getting mad.
The writing was on the wall for this situation since the day Brady retired from football, and Olsen will still be in a prime slot and have every chance to continue making fans happy.
