The San Francisco 49ers are back in their pursuit of a Super Bowl.
Kyle Shanahan’s team was pretty close to the ultimate glory again last season but eventually fell short of the goal against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, as the team goes through its voluntary offseason program, they have some notable absences on the field.
WRs Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk haven’t been in attendance, and neither has star RB Christian McCaffrey.
According to a report by ProFootballTalk, however, it’s unclear whether McCaffrey’s absence is contract-related, and coach Shanahan didn’t want to read too much into it either, stating that we’re talking about voluntary workouts.
“No, just like everyone else, it is voluntary,” Shanahan said. “I’m not too concerned about Christian. But no, he hasn’t been here.”

McCaffrey is about to get married, but there’s no word about whether that’s the underlying reason behind his absence.
Despite the current running back market and his injury-proneness, it would make sense for the Niners to try and get a deal done with him sooner rather than later, as he’s been stellar and healthy since arriving in the Bay area.
As for Aiyuk, he and his camp have been quite vocal about his desire to get a new contract and a bigger role in the offense, and while GM John Lynch has made it loud and clear that he wants him there for the long run, they might be forced to make a decision sooner rather than later.
