The Dallas Cowboys had an uneventful offseason and a workmanlike NFL Draft, which isn’t like them as usually the team will make at least one or two flashy moves each offseason to generate hype for the next season.
Head coach Mike McCarthy is happy with what he has on the roster already, and he recently sent a clear message about how he feels about his backup quarterback, Trey Lance.
Jon Machota of The Athletic shared a quote from McCarthy about his QB, and he said: “The athletic ability is top-notch. We’ve adjusted some things in his (throwing) motion. You can see the improvement and timing. Him and I talk about the preseason quite often, because that’s what we’re building towards.”

Lance has also been praised for being “super coachable” during his one year in Dallas and will be competing with Cooper Rush for the No. 2 quarterback job, and the Cowboys need to see what they have in both these backups and Dak Prescott, as all three are heading into the final year of their contracts.
Lance hasn’t appeared in a regular-season game since Week 2 of 2022 and flashed plenty of talent for the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason last year before the Cowboys acquired him for a fourth-round pick.
It feels like a distant memory when the Niners took Lance third overall in the 2021 draft, but there was a reason he was taken that high.
His talent is apparent, and the Cowboys are doing what they can to fine-tune it.
