Last season, the Dallas Cowboys made an unexpected move by making a deal with the rival San Francisco 49ers for quarterback Trey Lance, who has been in limbo ever since the emergence of Brock Purdy as a legitimate starter in the NFL.
The Cowboys didn’t give up much for Lance as they sent a fourth-round pick in exchange for the backup quarterback, but it did make some wonder about the reasoning behind the trade with star Dak Prescott still arguably in his prime and potentially on the verge of a massive contract extension.
Recently, Prescott was asked about what he’s seen from Lance during OTAs and he seems to be impressed with the young quarterback, although he admits he’s pushing him to be a better quarterback, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.
“I’m excited for where he is now. … He works his a** off,” Prescott said. “He’s pushing me. I’m somebody that I don’t like to let other people get more reps than me, and Trey is the person I need to watch, because he’s trying to get up there on the rep count. That’s a testament to him and how much he’s putting into this. I’ve seen it. He’s gotten better. He can play.”
Dak Prescott said Trey Lance has gotten “so much better” in his time with the Cowboys. “I’m excited for where he is now. … He works his ass off. He’s pushing me. At this point in time, it is uncertain what the future holds for Prescott in Dallas, as he could play out the final year of his deal with the team and head elsewhere in NFL free agency, which would hand the starting job to Lance unless the team brings in someone else.
Lance backing up Prescott will likely be a storyline throughout the 2024 campaign unless the team signs the veteran to a contract extension.
