Quarterback contracts around the NFL continue to get larger and larger, and each offseason we see a new batch of star QBs get a bag that resets the bar for the next guy in line for a huge payday.
There has been a lot of discussion this offseason about one QB in particular who is up for a hefty contract, and former QB/current analyst Chris Simms said he doesn’t believe he deserves a long-term deal.
Simms spoke with his father, former QB Phil Simms about the contract situation of Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, and he said that Tua should be given a short-term extension instead of a big long-term deal while also saying that 20 other quarterbacks would have led the NFL in passing yards like Tua did last season if they played in Miami instead of him.

Chris said that he knows Tua is good but isn’t ready to throw $45-50 million a year at him due to his injury history and the fact that he hasn’t won any big games yet.
There’s little precedent for what Simms is suggesting, and the Dolphins might have no choice but to give Tua a huge contract, because if they don’t somebody else would.
They built this offense around him and catered to his strengths, but after a couple of years of gaudy stats, he’s going to have to start winning big games because eventually his contract will hamper the moves the team can make around him and it will be up to him to elevate the roster.
Simms isn’t alone in this thinking, it’s just a tricky situation since so many other QBs are getting paid.
