Chicago White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi has amassed a nice career to this date.
He has a .271/.341/.410 career line with 81 home runs and a .751 OPS.
That’s not bad at all.
However, Benintendi is currently watching his name on the record books for all the wrong reasons.
We will let Baseball Reference explain why.
“Andrew Benintendi currently has the worst OPS (.491) among qualified players since 1968,” they tweeted.

Oof.
Usually a steady, if unspectacular performer, Benintendi is having a career-worst year so far.
Granted, playing for the White Sox is uninspiring, but he is slashing a pitiful .189/.226/.265 with the horrible .491 OPS.
That OPS would be the worst in baseball in more than half a century, 56 years to be exact.
Of course, there is a lot of baseball left to play in 2024 and it is highly unlikely Benintendi finishes with such an atrocious OPS.
But that’s where things stand at the moment.
There are some really interesting names on that list, including the most recent, former Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis.
Benintendi and Davis are actually the only ones from 2000 to this point, adding insult to injury for the current White Sox outfielder.
Chicago is arguably one of the worst teams in baseball, if not the worst.
Maybe they want to hold on to Benintendi, but if trading him is in their plans this season, they are not going to get many suitors if he is playing like this.
He is much better than this and will likely improve, but for today at least, it makes for a (not so) fun fact.
