The New York Mets weren’t expected to compete for the NL East division in 2024, but fans certainly didn’t want to see such an inconsistent squad.
As of Thursday, they have a disappointing 22-33 record.
They have been awful since late-April, in reality, with a 10-25 record dating back to April 21.
The team just keeps finding ways to lose games, and tensions are boiling.
Reliever Jorge Lopez certainly lost his cool on Wednesday, when he threw his glove into the stands after being ejected by the umpire.
That, and his postgame interview in which he called the Mets “the worst team in the whole [expletive] MLB” cost him his roster spot, as the organization designated him for assignment.
The pitcher later said via social media that he said he was “the worst teammate in the whole [expletive] MLB,” but a Mets insider thinks the team decision to boot him from the roster is justified.
“That’s it. That’s the whole thing. Regardless of what actual words López said, he swore multiple times on camera after having an hour-plus to cool off postgame. His tone was clear and obvious and the furthest thing from contrite. Mets officials found it unacceptable,” Anthony DiComo tweeted.

In the words of DiComo, Lopez “embarrassed the organization with his actions and words,” threw his glove into the stands, lied about meeting with management, and offered no remorse for his actions.
Those were the reasons why he was kicked off the roster.
Lopez leaves with a 3.76 ERA in 25.1 innings.
He was one of manager Carlos Mendoza’s preferred arms when it was time to protect a lead.
Mendoza said Lopez’s actions were “unacceptable.”
The latter won’t be a part of the organization anymore.
