The Detroit Lions are coming off perhaps the team’s best season in franchise history, with Jared Goff and company defying the odds and reaching the NFC Championship Game.
Unfortunately, the Lions fell short, even though they had a decent lead going into halftime against the San Francisco 49ers, as Detroit fell apart in the second half, leading to a disappointing loss that ultimately ended their magical season.
Once the NFL offseason got underway in Detroit, all signs pointed to offensive coordinator Ben Johnson leaving the team to become a head coach elsewhere, as he had become a hot commodity in the league as one of the top coaching candidates.
Although it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Johnson would leave Dan Campbell’s coaching staff to start his own thing with another franchise as the head coach, he shocked everyone by deciding to stay in Detroit for at least one more season.
Recently, Johnson provided some insight into why he chose to stay with the Lions rather than take a head coaching job somewhere else in the league, via Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit.
“I want the sunshine a little longer,” Johnson said.

Clearly, Johnson likes the situation in Detroit with Campbell and has some unfinished business moving forward, with the Lions expected to be one of the best teams in the NFC heading into the 2024 NFL season.
Even though the Lions may potentially come back stronger for the 2024 campaign, the 49ers and Green Bay Packers might also be stronger teams, which makes the dynamic in the conference that much more interesting.
