The Atlanta Falcons kind of shocked the world with their offseason approach.
Making a run at Kirk Cousins made plenty of sense, even if they had to overpay for an aging quarterback coming off a season-ending injury.
Getting Cousins would propel them right to contention in their division and perhaps even around the league as a whole.
That’s why no one had them picking a quarterback in the NFL Draft, let alone in the first round, and much less with the No. 8 selection.
Michael Penix Jr. drew great reviews, but he wasn’t particularly young, and most people expected him to be a late first-round pick, only making that selection all the more shocking.
However, and even though Cousins wasn’t consulted about the move, he’s being a good sport about it.
When asked about Penix and the team’s QB room, the former Minnesota Vikings star gushed about all of them and claimed that they’ve all been great (via ProFootballTalk):
“It’s been great,” Cousins said in a recent press conference. “You know, it continues to be kind of that working force together. There’s so much we all are kind of having to learn right now and grow together in. And so we’re doing that.”

Granted, Cousins isn’t going to be there for the next decade, so it made sense to have a plan for the future.
Still, Penix might be 25 or 26 by the time he gets the nod in Atlanta, so he may not have been the best fit for what they wanted to do.
Also, that may not be the right way to start your relationship with your new franchise quarterback.
The Falcons clearly have a plan and a vision.
