The New York Jets were in awe of Zach Wilson after his days at BYU and his Pro Day.
They didn’t hesitate to take him with the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft, and while some thought that was a bad decision, others thought he was a star in the making.
Needless to say, that wasn’t the case.
Wilson struggled mightily and lost his job multiple times and to multiple backups.
He kept making his way to the field because of injuries.
And just when it seemed like he was finally hitting his stride, he regressed significantly again.
Now, he’s not even with the Jets organization, and he’s trying to earn his spot in the Denver Broncos’ pecking order.
Even so, former teammate Sauce Gardner still has love for him.
Talking to former NFL player Chris Long on his podcast, he claimed that he competed against Wilson for two years, so he knows for a fact that he has all the tools to become a top-tier quarterback in the league (via Green Light).
“[Zach Wilson] has all the tools that it takes to be a top tier NFL quarterback.”

He admitted that he didn’t see him do that in actual games, and he didn’t know what it would take to bring the best out of him.
However, he still believes he has what it takes to be special.
That should mean a lot, coming from one of the true lockdown defenders in the game.
Still, given his current status, it’s hard to envision him ever getting another opportunity to be a starter, barring a surprising turn of events or another string of injuries.
