The Seattle Seahawks have been set at the quarterback position for most of the past decade.
Russell Wilson was a steady option under center for many years, a fantastic player for the organization.
However, after Wilson moved on, there were some questions about how the team would fill in for him.
Geno Smith led the team to the playoffs in his first season as their starter, and the Seahawks narrowly missed the playoffs in 2023.
Despite this success, however, there were a few questions surrounding Smith’s long-term value for the franchise heading into the offseason.
Many fans and analysts projected the Seahawks to draft a quarterback in this year’s draft, given the depth of the class.
However, GM John Schneider and his staff ultimately decided that another move was in their best interest, as he outlined in a recent segment of “The Insiders.”
“We really like Sam’s upside a lot. You know, he started 18 games, has been a productive player in this league, and we really like his swag,” Schneider said.
Why did the #Seahawks trade for Sam Howell instead of waiting to draft a quarterback? It involved a film session in which they concluded six QBs could be gone before they were on the clock at No. 16.

Schneider is referring to their acquisition of Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders.
As he mentioned, Howell was the Commanders’ starter for the entirety of the 2023 season, which was a valuable experience for the young QB.
Howell is now the QB 2 on their depth chart behind Smith, who is still the incumbent starter.
While the depth chart still lists Smith as the starter, it appears that Schneider and his staff are confident in Howell’s abilities, and would seemingly give him a chance to start if Smith struggles.
