Ever since the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in overtime, the attention has shifted to star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and the team trying to see eye-to-eye on a contract extension to keep him in the Bay Area.
Unfortunately for both sides, the 49ers and Aiyuk haven’t been on the same page regarding this contract extension, which has fueled speculation that they could trade him rather than pay him during this NFL offseason.
As more and more time goes by without a deal, it seems more and more likely that the team will trade him elsewhere, with the reports about these contract discussions not being a good sign about where things are headed.
The latest report about the contract talks between Aiyuk and the 49ers comes from Matt Barrows of The Athletic, who claims the negotiations have been “difficult” between the two sides, via 95.7 The Game.
“I wouldn’t say ‘contentious,’ but it’s been difficult negotiations with Brandon Aiyuk,” Barrows said. “It is interesting, though, that the 49ers used a first-round pick on a WR; he’s played well in spring. That’s only strengthened the 49ers’ stance… The fines will begin to pile up. There’s no indication that the 49ers will forgive Aiyuk for absences like they did for Nick Bosa.”

With the 49ers surprisingly selecting rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall during the 2024 NFL Draft, the team could be preparing for Aiyuk’s departure, which obviously doesn’t bode well for him getting a new deal in San Francisco.
Only time will tell how things pan out in the Bay Area, as it seems the team is no closer to a deal with Aiyuk.
