On Monday, in a move that surprised exactly no one, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that longtime head coach Mike Tomlin had signed a three-year contract extension to remain with the team.
After all, more than any other in North American professional sports, the team sets the bar for stability at the head coaching position.
Players respect and respond to such leadership, including superstar Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt.
Watt took to social media to express his happiness with ownership ensuring yet more stability for the franchise.

Struggling after Week 15 last season with a 7-7 mark and unable to find consistency at quarterback, Tomlin’s troops rallied to win three straight and advance to the AFC playoffs.
Tomlin’s tenure with the club began in 2007 when he was hired to replace Hall of Famer Bill Cowher, who led the team from 1992 to 2006.
Before Cowher, the Hall of Fame legend Chuck Noll won four Lombardi Trophies at the helm of the Steelers from 1969 to 1991.
Again, consistency.
Tomlin’s 17 years on the Pittsburgh sideline are exemplified by several accomplishments, but none is more outstanding than his never suffering through a losing season.
Two of his first four campaigns ended on the sport’s largest stage, with a Super Bowl championship after the 2008 season and a loss in the title game two years later.
Though Tomlin has yet to return to that rarified air, he is the steady hand that every organization desires at the top.
And with what may be a rejuvenated Russell Wilson at quarterback in 2024, he may yet again climb to the mountaintop of the NFL.
