Justin Herbert joined the fun during the 2023 NFL offseason, signing a five-year, $262 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.
This did not come as a surprise to many, given Herbert’s success in his first three seasons with the team.
While Herbert has played well in his career to date, Ryan Clark recently voiced some concerns with the young quarterback.
There’s something missing with Herbert right now. He’s a fantasy football owner’s dream, & an organizational mirage. Lots of empty promise so far. When it matters most…

Clark said that there is “something missing” in Herbert’s game at the moment.
In the Chargers’ recent loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Herbert threw for 227 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
In Clark’s mind, Herbert might put up stats that are exciting to fantasy football managers but fail to come through in clutch moments.
This has led to the Chargers having a 2-3 record through their first five games, putting them in third place in the division standings.
Given the team’s performances thus far, Clark also described the current situation with Herbert as an “empty promise.”
The Chargers paid Herbert to be their franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future, with an expectation that he would bring the team greater success.
Head coach Brandon Staley has been in the hot seat thus far, and new OC Kellen Moore’s offense has not played as advertised.
Something has to change within the organization if they want to find success soon.
With the Kansas City Chiefs slated to win the AFC West for the eighth-straight year, they have established themselves as yearly contenders.
Can the Chargers figure out a way to fulfill their promises, making a significant impact in the AFC?
