Every position on an NFL roster is vital to a team’s success.
Football is the definition of a true team sport, as every position needs to work together in harmony on every play, otherwise, it can spell disaster.
Defensive backs and safeties have a critical role to play, as they are the last line of defense against their opponents.
Many consider these to be among the most difficult positions in the NFL due to the high caliber of offensive talent across the league.
It takes an incredible athlete to be great in this role, and thankfully for several NFL teams, they have been blessed with great young talent in their secondary in recent seasons, picking up valuable players in the draft.
While there are certainly some solid long-time veterans at the position, Chris Harris recently indicated that the top three DBs in the league are some of the youngest.
Harris appeared on the “All Facts No Breaks” podcast to discuss this, saying that Patrick Surtain, Derek Stingley Jr., and Sauce Gardner are the best at the position.

All three of these athletes have had a lot of success early in their NFL careers, and all of them have three or less years of experience.
This is a sign that the position is in good hands moving forward and that what they are learning in college is paying off in the pros.
The caliber of offensive talent has skyrocketed at the collegiate level in recent seasons, forcing defensive backs to adapt and get better to defend them.
