The Minnesota Vikings created big shoes to fill when franchise quarterback Kirk Cousins quickly signed with the Atlanta Falcons this offseason, and former Michigan national champion J.J. McCarthy was selected tenth overall in the draft to try to fill them.
McCarthy might not start right away after veteran Sam Darnold was signed in the offseason, but the team has apparently been impressed with McCarthy’s work ethic already and is pleased that he is doing all the right things.
Bussin’ With The Boys posted on X that McCarthy has reportedly been studying the playbook and play names with his fiancé every night, which has helped him grasp the offense faster than expected.

McCarthy turned 21 earlier this year, so there is no rush to insert him into the starting lineup, especially given Darnold’s experience.
If Darnold plays well, Vikings fans might not see McCarthy until next season, when he’ll still be only 22.
The Vikings are set to deal with a difficult NFC North, after the red-hot Lions won last year and fell just short of a Super Bowl run, the Green Bay Packers won a playoff game in their first year under Jordan Love, and the Chicago Bears are now loaded with No. 1 pick Caleb Williams taking over at QB leading a completely revamped offense.
If McCarthy were the Week 1 starter, it would be a lot for him to deal with right away, but with his work ethic, perhaps he’s more ready than many think.
