There is no MLB offseason without New York Yankees trade rumors.
The funny thing is that the offseason hasn’t officially started because four teams are still in the race to win it all, but for the Yankees, it’s already time to think about reshaping the roster and making it competitive again.
Former general manager and current analyst at The Athletic Jim Bowden has the Yankees as a potential suitor for San Diego Padres outfielder Juan Soto, should they trade him.
Soto will be a free agent after 2024, but it’s not clear what the Padres plan to do with him.
They have a chance to keep him and make another run at the World Series next year, but they may also opt to shop him knowing that it’s highly unlikely he signs an extension.
If they do flip him to another team, the Yankees are one of the squads to look out for.
Bowden has an idea of the pieces that might be involved in a hypothetical trade.
“According to @JimBowdenGM, the #Yankees were listed as #1 on a list of 5 teams to look out for in a Juan Soto trade. Bowden listed Michael King and Jhony Brito as pitchers who could be in the deal and bats like Everson Pereira and Oswald Peraza,” Fireside Yankees tweeted.

On talent alone, Soto is one of the best in the league.
However, since he is under control for just one more year and it’s not exactly cheap, his trade value is not the highest.
Still, the Padres won’t give a player capable of hitting 35 home runs, driving in 109 runs, and walking 132 times away for nothing.
Soto also had a cool .930 OPS this year and scored 97 runs, so he remains a difference-maker about to turn 25.
It’s unclear if the Padres would accept a deal with Michael King and Oswaldo Peraza as centerpieces, but adding Everson Pereira and perhaps another prospect might be enough to keep the conversations afloat.
