Quarterback contracts are getting out of control in the NFL, but you can’t help but congratulate players for getting their bags, as Jacksonville Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence recently signed a five-year, $275-million deal.
Lawrence’s contract tipped the scales and sparked a lot of conversations about QB contracts in general since he hasn’t accomplished a whole lot since being drafted first overall three years ago, but another QB who is in line for a new deal has the “best chance” of being the first $60 million per year player according to one analyst.
Jason Fitzgerald from Over The Cap recently appeared on The Ross Rucker Podcast and said that “(Dak) Prescott has the best chance of being the first $60M quarterback” before adding, “if you couldn’t win with him at $40 million, how are you going to win with him at $60 million?”

The Cowboys have been noncommital about giving Prescott a new contract this offseason, just as they have for head coach Mike McCarthy.
Every new quarterback contract seems to top the previous record, which naturally stokes a fire and draws comparisons to previous deals that are hard to justify.
Lawrence will be the highest-paid QB in the league next year while Kansas City Chiefs superstar and 3-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes is tied for ninth, even though he signed his own huge contract just a few years ago.
Fitzgerald makes a great point about the Cowboys’ lack of playoff success and how much more difficult that would get if the team chose to give Dak a $20 million raise.
