June is always a quietly critical month for NFL teams because they get a chance to see all or most of their players take the practice field together before training camp.
Coaching staffs and front offices across the league also have to make difficult decisions when things aren’t working out for a player or two, and in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ case, they recently had to move on from two players.
According to their official site, they waived safety Trenton Thompson and wide receiver Denzel Mims.

Thompson broke into the NFL in 2022, and after going undrafted out of San Diego State, the safety made his way to the New York Giants.
He played in one game that year for Big Blue, logging 12 special teams snaps, but the 26-year-old made a more significant impact with the Steelers in 2023.
He played in six games for Mike Tomlin, recording 22 tackles, three pass deflections and an interception.
In Denzel Mims’ case, the former second-round Jets pick continues to search for the right home.
Mims has 42 receptions for 676 yards and no touchdowns in his career, and those numbers came with the Jets before he was traded to the Lions in the summer of 2023.
He was picked up by Pittsburgh in October of 2023 and put on their practice squad.
Mims will continue looking for a place with the right offensive role.
