The Cleveland Browns defense showed up in a big way after the BYE week.
They had no choice, as they would have to host the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers without Deshaun Watson, who was still out nursing a shoulder injury.
In spite of PJ Walker’s mistakes, the Browns managed to hang on and made it a tight game in the fourth quarter.
So, now that they’ve handed the Niners their first regular-season loss of the Brock Purdy era, Craig Carton doesn’t want to hear any criticism for their QB.
In the latest edition of his show, Carton talked about how unfair it was to start talking about Brock Purdy being just a system quarterback, mostly because he wasn’t even to blame for the loss.
“People hate on Brock Purdy and I’m here to defend him. He’s still an MVP candidate and he got them in the spot to win the game.”

He stated that if that game were the Super Bowl, everybody would talk about how the kicker missed the game-winning field goal wide right, and not about whether Purdy played well or not.
The Niners had game-planned for Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, and losing them to injuries was obviously a major blow to their expectations.
Purdy shouldn’t be blamed for having some elite weapons at his disposal, especially if you consider the fact that he actually earned the starting QB spot, it’s not like it was just given to him.
Also, perhaps the media and the fans should give the Browns’ defense way more credit for this win.
They’ve been the best defense in the league this season, and they’ll be ready to play against anybody.
