The New England Patriots’ new era is officially underway.
Drake Maye will eventually take the reins as QB1, barring a disaster or a shocking turn of events.
He’s currently competing with — or more like learning from — Jacoby Brissett, a proven veteran who’s likely going to get the nod to be the starter right away.
Nonetheless, it seems like another player could enter the race for the QB1 spot as well.
Recently, Patriots WR Kendrick Bourne wanted to keep his new teammate on his toes, letting him know that he was coming for his spot while playing quarterback at his youth camp (via Carlos Talks Pats).

Needless to say, this was nothing but a playful joke with no ill-intent, and it seems like both players have hit it off really well.
The reports about Maye have been mostly positive.
While it’s more than evident that he’s still quite raw and will need some polishing and mentoring from a football standpoint, it seems like he’s earned his teammates’ respect with his great work ethic, attention to detail, and determination to get better.
The Patriots aren’t expected to be very good next season, and they won’t rush the UNC product to the field.
Brissett will handle the starting duties to begin the campaign, and Maye will only make his way to the gridiron if either Brissett gets hurt or the coaching staff is comfortable with where he’s at in his development.
That of course, assuming Bourne doesn’t leap-frog him in Jerod Mayo’s pecking order.
