After the Washington Commanders recently traded quarterback Sam Howell, their starter last season, it looked absolutely certain they would take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
However, unexpected or even strange decisions are sometimes made, and perhaps one shouldn’t assume that Washington will remain at No. 2 on the draft board.
General manager Adam Peters at least gave lip service to the possibility of trading down if it would be in his team’s best interest, per Ben Standig.
“(If) the best thing for us is to stand pat, then we’ll stand pat, but you’re always going to listen to all the different possibilities. Trading up, trading back … weigh all the different possibilities and make the best decision,” Peters said, per Standig.

The Chicago Bears have the No. 1 pick and seem poised to take Caleb Williams from the University of Southern California, which would mean, in all likelihood, the Commanders would take Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye at No. 2.
All three are potential-laden quarterbacks, but a fourth face — J.J. McCarthy — had added intrigue to this whole situation.
McCarthy is almost universally regarded as the fourth-best QB in this year’s draft, and there has been some talk that perhaps Washington would like to draft him.
If that talk is true, perhaps it could result in them trading down and gaining an additional first-round pick they could use to address one of their other needs.
They could use another true threat at wide receiver alongside Terry McLaurin, as well as an edge rusher.
The Commanders finished last in points allowed, passing yards allowed, and passing touchdowns given up during the 2023 campaign.
With their new ownership team headed by billionaire investor Josh Harris, they seem to have a clean slate right now, not to mention the opportunity to build the type of winning team they had in the 1980s and early 1990s.
