The 2023 NFL season marks the first time in two decades that Tom Brady isn’t under center for a team.
Brady spent most of his career with the New England Patriots where he led them to six Super Bowl championships before leaving for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he won one more title.
Brady has seven Super Bowl rings to his name and understands the game just about as anyone in league history.
That’s why the NFL world stopped and listened when he spoke with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith about the current state of football in the league.
Brady didn’t hold back any punches as he called the current play mediocre and went after the lack of development of players.
While some people agreed with Brady’s criticisms, former quarterback Alex Smith fired back with a jab at Brady’s competition in the AFC East via NFL Countdown.
“He played in the most uncompetitive division I think in NFL History,” Smith said.

Smith was challenging Brady’s point about how the current game is watered down, and his point about the AFC East is a good one as the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and Miami Dolphins all were poorly run teams during Brady’s tenure with the Patriots.
Brady had the benefit of beating down those teams en route to numerous AFC East division titles, though the player development piece remains a solid point.
Smith may not have appreciated Brady’s comments, so now it’ll be interesting to see if the latter retorts back or simply lets things die down in the news cycle.
