After more than two decades with Bill Belichick at the helm, the New England Patriots are heading in a different direction starting in the 2024 NFL season.
The Patriots parted ways with Belichick and elevated linebackers coach Jerod Mayo to become the franchise’s new head coach.
Along with Mayo, New England overhauled the rest of the coaching staff, opting to promote several assistants into larger roles.
However, the Patriots did make a few external hires and arguably the most important one was Alex Van Pelt who was brought in to become the team’s new offensive coordinator.
Van Pelt was fired shortly after the Cleveland Browns were ousted in the Wild Card Round, but it didn’t take him very long to land back on his feet.
The former Browns offensive coordinator will be calling plays for the Patriots and he admitted that it’s going to be a new challenge and experience for him via Around The NFL.
“It’s definitely different,” Van Pelt said.

During his time in Cleveland, Van Pelt assisted with designing the offensive scheme but head coach Kevin Stefanski was the one calling plays.
In New England, though, Van Pelt will get his chance to shine and bring some life back into the team’s offense.
The first step will be for Van Pelt and the rest of the staff to figure out the quarterback situation as they are highly likely to draft a replacement for Mac Jones.
Jones was benched during the regular season, so it stands to reason that Van Pelt will have a new signal caller to work with in 2024.
