The New England Patriots shunned all potential trade offers in the 2024 NFL Draft and decided to select North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick, making him next in line to be the potential savior of this franchise and the leader of the post-Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era.
It wasn’t a lock that Maye would be the third pick given all the rumors swirling prior to draft day, but one analyst has shared some insight into why the Pats decided to take Maye instead of taking one of the many offers to trade down.
Analyst John Middlekauff recently said, via The Volume, that the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings wanted Maye and that a reason why the Pats stayed at No. 3 is because of how respected Giants head coach Brian Daboll and Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell are, with the thinking being if those two want to move up for Maye, that maybe it makes the most sense to just take him.

Daboll was in Buffalo when the Bills traded up for Josh Allen, while O’Connell has shown to be one of the best offensive minds in the league since taking over in Minnesota.
Maye has been compared to Josh Allen consistently given his athletic ability and powerful arm, and has a lot more to like than Mac Jones did.
The Patriots traded Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason and signed Jacoby Brissett in free agency, who is one of the most respected veterans in the league.
