The Falcons choosing to draft Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 overall pick took the cake as the biggest stunner of the NFL Draft’s first round.
That is because they already signed veteran Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal earlier this offseason.
Fox Sports’s Craig Carton was brutally honest about Atlanta’s selection on The Carton Show Friday morning.
“This happens to be the dumbest pick in the entire first round,” Carton told viewers.
“This happens to be the DUMBEST pick in the entire first round.”

To say that the Falcons didn’t need to take a quarterback is an understatement.
They had other needs along the trenches that needed to be addressed.
Why draft a position that already is locked up for the four years?
At the same time, this strategy has worked before, especially in a town called Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The Packers have gone from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love.
At the time that the team chose Rodgers and Love respectively, fans were not happy.
But in the end, both ended up seemingly being the right pick.
Having a quarterback with talent, such as Penix, that can sit and learn behind a true pro in Cousins is a smart move looking at it from a different perspective.
What if Cousins’s Achilles pops out again too?
This pick might not be the most beloved move right now, but in a few years, it very well could be.
Additionally, if GM Terry Fontenot has a plan to address their other edge-rusher and offensive line issues, that makes the pick even better.
