The 1-5 New England Patriots have been struggling this season more than they have in decades, and the player seemingly in the middle of those struggles and the resulting criticism is quarterback Mac Jones.
After a promising rookie campaign in 2021 in which he made the Pro Bowl, he is having trouble handling his duties, and it is starting to look like he may be a below-average quarterback.
But some have blamed head coach and de-facto general manager Bill Belichick instead, and some have speculated he could even be on the hot seat.
NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran implied that Belichick is to blame for Jones’ poor play while saying the signal-caller has been “put in a position to fail.”
My Slant: Mac Jones does not deserve the disaster that’s been put around him

Curran cited the Patriots’ inability to go out and get a top-level wide receiver, their decision to part ways with wideout Jakobi Meyers this past offseason, and some questionable coaching staff decisions.
Through six games, Jones has completed 64.2 percent of his passes and has thrown more interceptions (seven) than touchdown passes (five), and in their Sunday loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, although he completed 24 of 33 passes, he didn’t throw a single touchdown pass.
Jones has already been benched this season, and there are rumors he could be benched again unless he steps up his level of play.
The Patriots have two difficult games coming up — October 22 versus the Buffalo Bills and a road contest against the high-powered Miami Dolphins the following weekend.
They could very well find themselves stuck on one win at the midway point of the season.
