The Philadelphia Eagles recently made a surprising move at the quarterback position.
Jalen Hurts is still poised to be the team’s starter, but they traded with the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire Kenny Pickett.
Pickett was a first-round draft pick, but he hadn’t shown enough to the Steelers to give them confidence in him long-term.
Chris Simms tweeted about this trade, calling it a “smart move by the Eagles.”
Smart move by the Eagles to trade for Kenny Pickett. Insurance policy and they had nothing behind Jalen Hurts. Pickett does a bunch of things decently but nothing special. Good backup, no threat to be the starter

He indicated that Pickett “does a lot of things decently but nothing special,” adding, “Good backup, no threat to be the starter.”
With no tangible prospects behind Jalen Hurts, this was a low-cost move for the Eagles, who were in need of a backup quarterback.
If Hurts gets hurt at any point in the season, Pickett could see the field, hoping to get a new opportunity elsewhere.
While Pickett hasn’t played inspiring football to this point in his career, as fans have seen in recent history, anything can happen in the NFL.
Take Geno Smith, for instance.
Smith was Russell Wilson’s backup in Seattle, and when Wilson was traded, he was given an opportunity to start.
This led to the Seahawks signing Smith to a contract extension.
The same thing could happen to Pickett in Philadelphia, although fans hope Hurts stays healthy.
While it would be great for Pickett to have increased opportunities, it would also be someone else’s downfall.
It will be interesting to see how his career plays out and if he will be relegated to backup roles for the foreseeable future or if another team will give him a chance.
