The Atlanta Falcons made the most shocking decision of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Taking Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 wasn’t only shocking because of the pre-Draft projections but also because of the fact that they had just signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year, very substantial contract.
Most people expected them to go after a pass rusher, with Dallas Turner as the likeliest choice.
College football analyst Rick Neuheisel, instead, thought they should’ve given Cousins another weapon.
Talking on The Dan Patrick Show, the renowned analyst claimed that the Falcons would’ve been better off taking Rome Udonze instead, lining him up opposite of Drake London to give them a very solid offensive core that also features Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson.

Truth be told, Penix Jr. is a very talented quarterback who might end up being the best in this class, or at least one of the most productive.
Still, he’s 24 years old, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to have him sitting for one year or two behind a veteran quarterback.
Also, that’s not precisely the best message to send your newly-signed quarterback.
From all standpoints, this move was hard to explain, and even Penix Jr. himself may have been surprised and not so thrilled to have heard his name being called by the Atlanta Falcons under these circumstances.
