J.J. McCarthy is officially a Minnesota Viking.
The National Football League is a passer’s league, and the Vikings needed to find their guy to kick off the post-Kirk Cousins era.
McCarthy started the pre-draft process as a mid-to-late first-round prospect, but he made big strides after an impressive Pro Day and set of interviews.
Also, some scouts really fell in love with his tape, and the more they watched it, the more they thought of him as a franchise-caliber player.
Nonetheless, that’s not the case with Greg Cosell.
Talking on The Ross Tucker podcast, the lifelong analyst claimed that he didn’t see a strong or impressive arm from him in his college tape, adding that he didn’t evaluate Pro Days or private workouts because that’s not the way he assesses prospects.
“It required a lot of effort for him to make throws…whole body involved and everything had to be right…had to work to throw it…”@GregCosell explains why he looks at new Vikings QB JJ McCarthy as a developmental prospect: pic.twitter.com/TmO8DaGszj

Cosell stated that it took McCarthy plenty of conscious efforts to make big throws, adding that everything needed to be perfect for him to make a throw.
He believes he’s a developmental prospect more than anything at this point.
McCarthy’s numbers in college were less than impressive, and he wasn’t reacquired to do much in Michigan’s run-heavy offense.
That’s a concern.
Then again, he did excel on third-down situations, and he seemed to be capable of making all the throws he needed to make when his number was called.
Of course, the jury will still be out on him, and it might take a while before he proves people right or wrong.
But right now, he might be the biggest wild card and question mark entering the league.
