After barely missing out on making the playoffs, the Seattle Seahawks made the surprising decision to part ways with long-time head coach Pete Carroll.
Carroll was beloved in Seattle for his infectious personality and leading the franchise to a Super Bowl, but the organization felt it was time to move on.
Like several other teams, the Seahawks dipped into the head coaching market at the right time as there were a number of qualified candidates.
The strength of Seattle’s roster lies in the defense as they’ve got young talent at nearly all field levels and are poised to take big steps forward in the 2024 NFL season.
In the NFC West, head coaches like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan torch opposing defenses so it made sense to hire the Baltimore Ravens’ defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their head coach.
Adam Schein lauded the choice for Macdonald and compared him to the Los Angeles Rams’ McVay via CBS.
“I absolutely love the Seattle Seahawks hiring Mike McDonald as their next head coach. … I think Mike McDonald is going to be the defensive version of Sean McVay,” Schein said.

McVay took the league by storm as the youngest head coach at 30, and Macdonald now shares that title.
McVay’s genius scheme design and playcalling is widely regarded around the league, while Macdonald established himself as a smart and intuitive defensive mind.
There probably wasn’t a better roster fit and situation for Macdonald as he now gets to rebuild the Seahawks in his image and he has plenty of pieces already on hand to do so.
