The Pittsburgh Steelers have made several surprising moves during the early stages of free agency, including signing Russell Wilson.
Wilson is expected to be the team’s starter, and after this move was made, many fans believed the team had found their QB.
However, the Steelers traded for Justin Fields, adding him as a depth piece behind Wilson.
While this could be the case, Mike Florio has presented an alternative option in a recent article from Pro Football Talk.
Florio indicated that the Steelers could move him during the season, especially if another team offers more for Fields than they initially paid.
“The Steelers could re-trade Fields if/when an opportunity to do so arises,” Florio said.
Steelers could eventually do with Justin Fields what the Bears didn’t — hold him until an injury to a starter on another team creates an opportunity for a better trade. https://t.co/LrhZ8zAuLp

With the number of injuries in the NFL over the past year, especially to quarterbacks, there is a chance that another team in the league will need a new starter.
Florio pointed to Josh Dobbs in this article, indicating that teams found value in him last season, which allowed him to start for teams that had lost their starters due to injury.
Fields could provide a similar value to an NFL roster in 2024, assuming the Steelers are comfortable with Wilson as their starter for the remainder of the year.
Wilson has been an MVP candidate at times throughout his career, but that wasn’t the case for him in the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos.
If he plays more similar to how he did in Denver over the past two years than in Seattle, there’s a chance Fields would get an opportunity to start over him in Pittsburgh.
