On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a big splash when they went out and acquired quarterback Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
Fields is a former first-round draft pick, and after things didn’t go according to plan with the Bears, the Steelers are hoping that a change of scenery could help him reach his full potential.
Following Pittsburgh’s acquisition of the young quarterback on Saturday, ESPN’s Chris Canty believes extending head coach Mike Tomlin should be next on the team’s list of priorities this offseason (via Chris Canty on Twitter).
Absolutely love the Justin Fields trade for the @steelers. They needed to address QB in a real way this offseason and they did it more cost-effectively than any other franchise in recent memory. Now just waiting on them to announce the Tomlin contract extension #Steelers pic.twitter.com/7qV9l0HiMX

Ever since Pittsburgh hired him in 2007, Tomlin has been one of the most successful head coaches in the history of the NFL.
In addition to leading the Steelers to a Super Bowl win during his second season with organization, the longtime head coach has also led the franchise to seven AFC North titles and 11 appearances in the playoffs.
Pittsburgh has also never finished a regular season with a losing record with Tomlin as the team’s head coach, which is arguably the most impressive accomplishment from his tenure with the franchise.
Canty clearly believes the job Tomlin did in 2023 by helping lead the Steelers to the playoffs with three different starting quarterbacks is worthy of the head coach getting a contract extension from the team.
With Saturday’s addition of Fields, Pittsburgh’s quarterback room now consists of the former Chicago signal-caller and Russell Wilson.
It seems to be a much better situation than what the Steelers dealt with at the quarterback position in 2023 and the team is hoping it leads to success next season.
