The Chicago Bears finally decided the direction of their franchise when they dealt away Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick.
That sixth-rounder can potentially turn into a fourth-round selection if Fields ends up playing 51 percent of the snaps in Pittsburgh.
It’s the end of a short era in Chicago for Fields who showed flashes but was never given the proper tools to succeed.
The Bears mismanaged their roster, though have a chance to completely reset the quarterback positon when they pick first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Chicago, in all likelihood, will take USC’s Caleb Williams, the draft’s darling prospect and one of the best quarterbacks to come out of college in recent memory.
However, analysts like Emmanuel Acho believe the Bears botched the trade, via his personal Twitter account.
“The Bears should’ve waited until draft day to trade Justin Fields. When the Minnesota Vikings, who pick at No. 13, could not trade up for a quarterback, that’s when they should’ve dealt him. Or say when the Las Vegas Raiders, who pick at No. 11, could not trade up for a quarterback, that’s when they should’ve traded him.”
After a day to process it, here’s how the @ChicagoBears completely botched the Justin Fields trade, and what they should’ve done instead. Let’s talk! #AchoAnalysis pic.twitter.com/w8vF44xWOy

Acho makes a solid point as quarterback-needy teams will typically overpay to find a player they think still has upside.
Chicago could’ve likely gotten more for Fields around the draft, but they clearly wanted to move on as soon as possible.
The Bears may have missed out on an opportunity to get more assets back, but they’re in the driver’s seat considering they can take Williams.
