Justin Fields is no longer a starter in the NFL.
At least, that should be the case this year.
The former first-round pick was traded from Chicago to Pittsburgh earlier this offseason.
However, that move came after the team signed nine-time Pro-Bowler Russell Wilson.
So, Fields is going to be a backup this season.
Fox Sports’s Craig Carton had this to say recently on The Carton Show about Fields and his current role:
“You’re a backup quarterback at best…If you want to be on the field in an NFL game on Sundays, you’re going to have to do it in some other capacity,” Carton bluntly stated.

Perhaps sitting on the bench will be a good thing for Fields in this current stage of his career.
The 25-year-old spent the first three years of his career playing for a badly-run franchise in the Bears.
He played for multiple head coaches in multiple makeshift offenses.
The former Ohio State star went 10-28 as a starter in Chicago and barely had a completion percentage over 60%.
However, he did flash his running ability a lot.
In 2022, he rushed for 1,143 yards and 8 touchdowns.
That same year, he led the league in yards per rushing attempt at 7.1.
In Pittsburgh, he will get to learn how to become a better thrower of the football.
Russell Wilson, one of the best deep-ball throwers in the game, will definitely be a mentor to him.
Plus, it won’t hurt to have a winning head coach like Mike Tomlin guiding him as well.
