The New York Mets started off the season losing five straight games, then won 12 of their next 15; and after that, they have gone 7-15.
The roller-coaster ride has their record at a mediocre 19-23, fourth in the NL East and already 11 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the lead.
This was somewhat expected, though: 2024 was seen by many, including the organization itself, as a transition year.
Many people expect them to compete, though, but the Mets might not have the means to do that this year.
Following that train of thought, analyst Chris Rose stated that he not only sees the Mets potentially selling at the deadline, but that he thinks it could be the right move.
“The best move for the Mets’ future may be selling at the Trade Deadline,” he tweeted.

In his analysis, Rose compares the Mets to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The two organizations have a similarly large budget to buy free agents, but the Dodgers have a full system in place to replace any injured, traded, or lost players from within without giving up a competitive advantage.
The Mets are not at that point yet, so Rose suggests to go out and acquire more quality prospects at the deadline.
That would imply trading some really good players who are aging (J.D. Martinez, Starling Marte, Adam Ottavino) or nearing the end of their contracts (Pete Alonso) in exchange for young talent to keep replenishing the farm.
They implemented this strategy last year and got some really good prospects such as Luisangel Acuna, Ryan Clifford, Drew Gilbert, and more.
Will they do it again this season?
Or will they shift their strategy and become buyers?
Only time will tell.
