For years, the Indianapolis Colts tried to play it safe at the quarterback position.
They went with guys who had proven themselves in the league.
Perhaps they had proved themselves so much that they didn’t even have much left in the tank.
That’s why they decided to go in an entirely different direction this time, taking a leap of faith and swinging for the fences by drafting Anthony Richardson, the biggest wild card in last year’s draft.
Richardson drew many concerns and praise.
He’s a gifted athlete with the potential to be a disruptive two-way force in this league, but he also has little experience and showed accuracy issues.
Nonetheless, his lack of experience didn’t scare this team away, and according to franchise great Andrew Luck, he shouldn’t scare the fans either.
Talking in his recent appearance at the ChuckStrong fundraiser, Luck pointed out that Richardson definitely isn’t a kid, as it’s not easy to play quarterback in the NFL (Via The Indianapolis Star):
“He’s certainly not a kid. That guy’s out there playing quarterback in the NFL, and that’s hard. It’s really hard,” Luck said.
He believes the Colts are giving Richardson the right structure to develop and succeed, and he looks quite excited about the future of the organization.
Richardson was quite impressive in his first season, but injuries kept him on the shelf for most of the campaign.
Luck knows a thing or two about that, and the Colts must go the extra mile to make sure their new franchise quarterback doesn’t go through the same things that he went through.
Richardson can be a special player, but they must keep him healthy.
